Different Types of Name Badge Holders

A badge or name tag is an important part of a uniform. Badges and name tags are commonly used in work-places like fire departments and police stations. Uniform badges are a great way to immediately identify yourself, gain authority to an area or around equipment, and keep unwanted guests out of your work area. Below we break down the different types of name badge holders and when to use what type.

Types of Name Badge Holders

ATTACHED TO CLOTHING

MAGNET

Magnets are popular options for name badge holders. The strong magnets link together and hold a name tag or badge in place. One of the major positives to magnets is that they do not damage your uniform. Pins that go through the clothing over time can wear at the threads of the clothing and require you to replace your uniform.

Magnets are mostly used for name badges for low impact work. Fire department badges, police badges, and sheriff badges where physical activity is normal, probably won’t work well with magnets. While the magnets can be extremely strong, once the connection is broken the badge will fall off.

Plastic Badge Pins

pin your custom badgeIf you are looking for custom badges online, you might find some plastic badge pin holders. They are a bit more reliable than magnets and can be used on a wide range of name tags and badges. These are less durable than swivel or metal pin clips but get the job done for most companies.

We would not recommend these pins for firefighters, police, or other high activity workplaces. Plastic badge pins are best for desk work and offices looking to prominently display badges or name tags at all times.

Military Bars

Military bars are common for law enforcement badges and firefighter badges. They attach to the back of a badge or name tag via adhesive. The badge is then fastened to the uniform via two clips that puncture the clothing and are fastened on the other side. The placement of the two fasteners keeps the badge in place if hit or pushed around.

The only downfall of two pins on the military bars is that the placement of the fasteners puts a strain on your clothing. Police, military, and firefighter’s clothing are generally made up of thick durable material and it can still cause wear on the clothing. Even more so, if your work uniform is not made up of durable material military bars might not be the best option for you.

Swivel Clip

Your name badge is attached via adhesive to the swivel clip and then clipped on to your uniform. For those in a job that requires little to no activity level, this clip is perfect because it will not damage your work clothes.

The negative to the swivel clip is that it can easily be knocked off by physical force. Warehouses, active-duty personnel, and other physically demanding jobs probably should look for another type of clip.

Swivel Clips can also be attached to a retractable string normally made of metal or heavy plastic. This allows for a badge or name tag to be presented (normally to a reader) without having the person get their body right up the reader.

Lanyards

The last of the types of name tag and badge holder is the lanyard. The most common types of lanyards are nylon and polyester. Other types of material lanyards can be made of is silk, satin, and braided paracord. Lanyards typically go around a person’s neck and hold the name tag or badge at or around the bust of a person.

Lanyards have the benefits of being easily taken on and off. That means if you need your name tag or badge for something in the office you can throw it on but once you are back at your desk you can take it off.

The downfall of lanyards is that they can be lost easily. They also are noticeably less comfortable than the other name badge holders since they go around your neck.

A BONUS TYPE OF BADGE HOLDER

BELT HOLDER

The holder usually has a metal clip that attaches to the belt on the back. In the front of the badge holder, there is normally a slit where the badge can be attached and nestled in place.

The reason that belt holders are popular in the police agencies is the ability to hide but produce the badge easily when needed. Having the ability to pull the badge and display it in high-pressure situations is imperative.

Badge and Name Tag holders are important for any workplace that has name tags, security badges, or security cards. Name tags let employees know immediately who someone is and typically the job they perform at the company.

Having the right name tag holder for you or your employees is important. The holders will be a part of your everyday uniform. It is important to think about functionality, durability, and comfort when choosing a name badge holder.
